In this guide, we’ll show you how you can ask for the name, email, phone and other information of your visitor who contacts you via the Chatway widget.

It’s a useful functionality as it allows for a more personalized and engaging interaction. When a user’s name is known, you can address them by name in follow-up communications, adding a touch of personalization that fosters a sense of connection. Additionally, the option to add more custom fields enables even more tailored experiences, allowing you to gather and use specific information relevant to each user for even deeper engagement.

The collection of a phone number enables you to explore additional communication channels. While email is a common method, a phone call can provide a more direct and immediate way to address inquiries, provide support, or discuss services. This can lead to quicker issue resolution and improved customer satisfaction. Furthermore, with the ability to add custom fields, you can collect even more relevant information, ensuring that each communication, whether by phone or another channel, is more targeted and efficient.

Let’s start!

Step 1: Open your Chatway dashboard and click on the settings icon on top of your Chatway profile picture in the bottom left corner.

Step 2: You will see the Widget Settings, click the option under Collect visitor’s info.

Step 3: By default, the contact form is enabled, prompting users to provide their email address and name after sending their first message. This ensures that visitors who leave their email will be notified about responses even when they are offline, keeping them informed and engaged.

Step 4: If you want to require visitors to provide their contact info before they can start a chat, change it to Before visitor sends first message and tick the Required field checkbox.

Step 5: You can add more fields by clicking Add a field. Please note that additional fields are only available in the Pro plan. If you’re on a Pro trial, fields are removed once your plan is switched to free.

Additional fields available are Phone Number, Text, Long Text, Dropdown, Number, Date, and Link.

When adding a phone number field, an additional optional setting will appear, to enable country code formatting which will add a country code to the phone number field. You can also select a default country code from the below dropdown.

Step 6: Don’t forget to click Save and Publish for the changes to take effect.
